How MRI is Performed

• The patient arrives at the clinic 10–15 minutes before the scheduled time.

• At the reception, documents are processed; if necessary, the referral, tests (for contrast), and identification are checked.

• Before the procedure, the patient is asked to remove all metal objects and jewelry (watches, earrings, piercings, belts, bras with underwire, phones, etc.).

• Disposable clothing is provided if necessary.

• The doctor or nurse gives a short briefing: explains how the examination will proceed and how to behave during the procedure.

• The patient lies on the MRI table; the head or area being examined is fixed to prevent movement.

• Earplugs or headphones are provided (the machine makes loud noises).

• If contrast is required, the nurse places an intravenous catheter and administers the agent at the appropriate moment.

• It is important to remain still during scanning. Procedure duration is 20–40 minutes depending on the area and program (e.g., longer for epilepsy or neurovascular conflict).

• After scanning, the patient is assisted to stand and informed when and how they will receive the results.

• The procedure is painless, comfortable, with continuous audio communication with the doctor.

Absolute Contraindications

• Pacemaker — MRI may interfere with its function.

• Cochlear implant — the metal in the device is distorted in the magnetic field.

Relative Contraindications

• Metal structures (stents, endoprostheses, plates).

• MRI is allowed 3–4 months after installation. A statement from the treating physician must be provided before the examination.

Pregnancy

• MRI can be performed from the second trimester (from the 13th week). A referral and obstetric-gynecologist’s permission are required.
